Winterizing your RV

Whether you plan to store your RV over winter and let it hibernate until the snow melts in the spring, or you’re looking forward to winter outings, you must take steps to be sure your rig is in proper shape to handle the extreme temperatures. Most RV’s come prepared from some cold weather, with heating ducts into critical storage areas such as water and sewer tanks.

FIVE STEPS TO
WINTERIZING YOUR RV
1. Protect your RV’s water system.
To prevent damage to your RV’s water system, all water tanks, lines and pumps should be drained thoroughly. Non-toxic RV anti-freeze should be used to keep any remaining water from freezing the system.

2. Remove all foodstuffs from the rig. Most canned or bottled stuff will freeze, and the rest will attract mice, chipmunks, rats, etc. Check under the sinks and storage compartments to make sure you get it all. Clean the refrigerator from top to bottom, and leave it open to prevent mildew.

3. Remove batteries. If you will be storing your RV in a location where AC power is not available then it is best to remove the house and starting batteries and store them in a place where they won’t freeze. If you don’t wish to remove the batteries from your rig, then you should disconnect them so that parasitic current drains will not run them down during storage.

4. Use proper insulation. Insulate all openings and make sure windows and doors are properly sealed. Place egg crate bedding cushion in the roof vents and anywhere cracks or openings appear in the floor.

5. Check for holes. Make sure holes on the underside of the RV are either plugged with stainless steel wool or aluminum duct tape. Both will keep out rodents. Cover all external vents to keep critters out. Sprinkle ant killer around anything touching the ground.
